Healthy Eating Tips Part 1

This week's issue is some simple healthy eating tips which you may, or may not, already know. Healthy eating, of course, is a complex subject, with so many good, and bad, foods in the marketplace, or in your garden if you are lucky. It is not just about the foods, though, but about your own mental approach to eating, your habits, and your social surroundings.

Here are this week's healthy eating tips, with more to follow next time:

1. Do you have cravings for food that make you feel like you are addicted? The craving could be for unhealthy foods, such as those with high levels of refined sugar, or even healthy foods such as peanuts. Other way, the craving could signify a food allergy; and having such an allergy is not good for your health. Do yourself a favor, and have an allergy specialist check what foods you are allergic to.

I know someone who, as a child, had multiple food allergies and intolerances. He was very skinny, and not growing as he should despite eating a lot. When the guilty foods were withdrawn, and there were a lot of them, his health improved, and despite eating less, he steadily put on weight until he was a very sturdy child. it really is worth checking for food intolerance or allergy.

2. If you really are bored with the vegetables you know you should eat for health reasons, then spice them up a bit to make them more interesting. Add some garlic, spices such as turmeric, fenugreek or black pepper, to give them a bit of zest.

Having said that, a few moths ago my wife served up mixed vegetables including broccoli and carrots. They looked very colorful and fresh, but when I tasted them, they were far nicer than usual. The carrots, which I eat but do not like too much, were delicious.

"How did you cook the vegetables?" I asked. She had simply steamed them, and the carrots were tender, but rich in flavor. So, maybe the answer is to try steaming first, before adding spices and herbs.

3. If you have a local supply of organic fruits and vegetables, then use them whenever possible. Many fresh fruits and vegetables in supermarkets have a lot of pesticides and herbicides in. The organic produce is more tasty anyway, although it may not look so good as its chemical ridden neighbors on the store shelves.

4. There is nothing wrong with eating meat, but eat in moderation and cook with only lean pieces of meat. Poultry and fish are better than red meat, so switch the emphasis a bit if you are used to eating lots of red meat. Again, if you can get "organic meat" then do so. Animals reared with artificial chemicals, even drugs such as antibiotics, are not good for your health.

More next time.
