Finding a Herbal Sleeping Aid For a Natural Night's Sleep - Melatonin, Trytophan and Herbal Teas

Almost all of us suffer, at some time in our lives, from a shortage of sleep. We wake up in a poor mood, and find it difficult to concentrate all day at work. Usually, there may have been a specific factor that caused the problem, such as a sick baby, a party nearby, or you just ate too much of the wrong things at a dinner party. Occasional loss of sleep is difficult to avoid, but when it becomes regular it can become a serious problem, and that is when a herbal remedy may help some people.

Often people go direct to a doctor and get a sleeping aid in the form of a drug. If you prefer to try natural options first, then here are a few herbal sleeping aids that have a reputation of helping some people:

1. Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural substance that is produced naturally by the human body. If you do not produce enough melatonin, then that deficiency may disrupt sleep.

2. Trytophan

Another natural substance, trytophan, is found in foods such as bananas, dairy products, peanuts, and eggs. Treytphan has a calming effect which may help sleep. the best of these options for bed time is the banana, a healthy and fulfilling fruit. If our 3 year old daughter says she is hungry at bed time, and we belive it is not a ploy to stay up later, then a banana it is.

3. Various Herbal Teas

There are many herbal teas from around the world, some of which are said to have a calming effect and thus aid sleep. I found chamomile tea helpful when I was being kept awake by scabies, but others I have not tried personally are passion flower, red clover and lemon balm.

4. Other Possible Calming Herbs as Sleeping Aids

There are many other natural herbs, vitamins and substances that reputedly help to calm you and act as sleeping aids. They include calcium, St John's Wort (which I have used effectively in conjunction with chamomile tea) and valerian.

If you are already on sleep medication, be sure to consult a qualified health practitioner, preferably a naturopath, before mixing sleeping drugs with any herbal product.
