Healthy Herbs and Spices For Your Regular Diet - Fenugreek and Turmeric Health Benefits
It is difficult to keep up with all the current research on the many herbs and spices that have been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. As Western medicine and its synthetic drugs are increasingly discredited, more interest is being shown in finding out if there is any substance to any of the "old wives' tales" regarding health benefits of old herbs in spices.
Turmeric and fenugreek, two of the main ingredients of curry powders, are under quite extensive study. Turmeric especially has seen a burst of publicity as intensive research gets under way, or is completed, into one of its constituents, curcumin. Turmeric has had many medicinal uses for centuries, but curcumin is now being studied seriously for many chronic conditions, too, such as colorectal and pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma and Alzheimer's disease. There are more. Interestingly that traditional Indian medicine was aware of these health benefits thousands of years ago.
Fenugreek has been used for a digestive aid in Indian medicine and other uses exist in India. However, like turmeric, fenugreek is winning wider acclaim, firstly in controlling diabetes and it is also being studied for possible benefits in preventing some cancers.
There are many other very tasty herbs and spices that have traditional uses in medicine across the world, medicine based on wisdom and natural health, not synthetics and profit, which are the main drivers of Western medicine. We will look at some more next time. In the meantime, I am glad I just love Indian food with its rich spice mixes.
