The Crucial Role of Water in the Diet
If someone mentions health foods to you, then you probably think of bright and colorful vegetables and fruits, or maybe wholemeal bread. I know I would first think of a large bowl of my usual breakfast, which is papaya, melon and avocado in honey, with maybe banana added.
Few would think of water first, but water is, if anything, your number one weapon in the search for healthy foods and your own future good health. If you just dwell for a moment on the fact that the human body is 85% water, then it has to be glaringly obvious that water is absolutely critical to our health. Some parts of the body, such as the brain, are above 85%.
Yet, how much attention does the average person give to consuming water? Virtually zero. They most likely reach for a drink of coffee or tea, cola, soda, or beer. They seem much more attractive to the consumer; water is boring. Yet those popular drinks dehydrate the body, not replenish it with water.

If your body is suffering from any sort of problem, internal or on the surface, then it needs extra free water to help heal itself. If that water is not there in sufficient quantity then that healing cannot take place efficiently; your immune system is more likely to let you down.
According to Dr. F. Batmanghelidj water is even more important, than anyone had imagined before, in the healing process and in the prevention of chronic disease. He also argues that the Western diet has led to an epidemic of chronic dehydration, which itself can lead to cancer, heart and other serious threats to health. He goes as far as to say that pain is the body's cry for more water; real water, not water contained in tea or coffee or soda.
So, when you think health foods, think water as number one. Drink lots of filtered water, rid of all the chemicals that pollute tap water. Since reading about Dr. F. Batmanghelidj's work I have increased my water intake by maybe 50%; it was always high. But the way I think of water is enhanced from what it used to be. It is the body's lubricant of good health, and I treat each mouthful as a my necessary ally in preventing disease, and repairing any damage that may already have been done.
