Black Cohosh - What Is it and Does it Have Any Health Benefits?
Black Cohosh is a herb that has been used by women across the world as an aid to menstrual and menopause related problems. It has always been used primarily as a women's herbal treatment.
Apart from these traditional uses, though, black cohosh has been used by some in the treatment of eczema as well as insect bites.
The use of black cohosh fell out of favor in the United States, but has made something of a comeback over recent years, as it became more widely known as a safe way to treat menopausal problems such as hot flashes. Although some women report successful treatments with black cohosh, there is little scientific evidence to support its use for women's problems related to menopause and menstruation.
However, this is one herbal remedy that does have reports of side effects in a few cases. The types of side effects to be reported have been related to pregnant women, so as a precaution it is wise not to try it out while pregnant or lactating. Also, it can inhibit iron absorption, so iron levels need to be monitored.
Given that black cohosh has been used for such a long time by women, including native Indians in the US, more thorough scientific study may one day prove the benefits of this herb, and why it is of benefit. In the meantime, it is perhaps a good idea to search for the many other herbal remedies that are available, and see which one has the most evidence to back it as suitable for your needs.
