Sources of Fiber for a Healthy Diet
It is widely accepted now that fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, and most first world, as well as other, governments encourage the inclusion of fiber in diets. Most people are probably aware of wholemeal bread as a good source of fiber, which it is, but with wheat a common allergen, many people have to look for something else to help their fiber intake.
My number one source of fiber is psyllium but that is not exactly something you can enjoy consuming, or serving as a dessert or part of a main course. Fortunately, there are many sources of dietary fiber which have a good taste, so it is normally find something that will suit your own palate.
Sources of fiber are too numerous to list here, but here are a few you may enjoy as part of your diet:
Broccoli
Broccoli comes in many forms, and some are delicious, as well as being a source of fiber. My 3 year old daughter does not touch many vegetables any more, but when it comes to broccoli, she reaches straight for it. Current studies into the antioxidant value of broccoli, and its different varieties, are showing signs that broccoli may have a role in preventing some cancers. Watch for news on that one.
Green Beans
All beans can be a good source of fiber, and green beans can be a culinary delight too. Like broccoli, varieties vary when it comes to green beans. Some I love, some I hate, so just find one you love.
Spinach
Spinach is another dark green leafy vegetable, like broccoli. It is also a good source of fiber and iron.
Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are another vegetable with dark green leaves, which is an excellent source of fiber. Not everyone likes them, but young and fresh, they can be a treat to eat too.
Fruits
Many fruits are a good source of fiber, and fortunately some of those with the best fiber content are amongst the most delicious. Examples are strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and apples with their skin on.
