Gingko biloba has been a familiar name for a long time to those who have an interest in herbs with a reputed health benefit. In fact, its use in China and Chinese medicine goes back thousands of years. The Chinese have traditionally used gingko biloba for a variety of medical complaints.

The Origins and Uses of Gingko Biloba

The gingko biloba that you can buy in health stores comes from the gingko biloba tree. Over the years, it has acquired a reputation for providing health benefits, most notably in:

a. Aiding the maintenance of a normal blood flow.

b. The reduction of tissue damage which my have been caused by abnormal blood flow.

c. The maintenance of normal blood vessel functions.

d. The maintenance of normal blood circulation.

e. The prevention of leaking and fragility in capillaries, and

Gingko Biloba and Antioxidants

One of the reasons ginkgo biloba is thought to be beneficial, is because it contains some important antioxidants. Amongst these antioxidants are the flavonoids, which are a very valuable and powerful antioxidant.  Antioxidant nutrients are vital to combating any damage which could be done by free radicals in the body.  Also, flavonoids like those found in gingko biloba, are believed to strengthen capillaries, which may lead to increased blood flow to the brain, plus better memory and brain health.

Buying Gingko Biloba

When buying gingko biloba, it is good to bear in mind that it needs to have been processed properly. This means that the extracting process must fully remove the toxic element of the gingko leaf, called ginkgolic acid.  It is important that processed gingko biloba contains no more than 5 parts per million (ppm) of ginkgolic acid.  You will find that most of the higher quality gingko biloba extracts available today are well below the critical upper limit, but it is wise to use a reputable manufacter.

Ginkgo biloba is a very valuable herb, and it has been promising for treating a variety of conditions. It is readily available as a food supplement, so you should have no trouble finding it locally or online.
