The Health Benefits and Properties of Wild Yam

The wild yam has been used by herbalists for centuries. Its traditional uses include the treatment of colic, muscle spasms, asthma, inflammation and a range of other disorders. In more recent years, it has been marketed by some as an aid to menstrual disorders and hormonal problems during menopause.. However, there has been no scientific study that has proved such benefits are real.

It is believed by some that wild yam provides these hormonal benefits due to its estrogen like and progestin like properties. The rhizome is known to contain compounds known as sopanins, which are a precursor to the production of estrogen, progesterone and cortisone.

The wild yam, though does contain diosgenin, which is a steroid-like substance which is involved in the production of the hormone progesterone. Diosgenin played a key role in the making of hormones and the development of the birth control pill, so does have a significance in two very important drug developments over the past century.

The wild yam is actually a perennial vine, which has a pale brown rhizome and a thin reddish brown stem, which can grow as long as 36 feet. The wild yam has large oval leaves with a fine hair on the bottom of the leaf, and the plant produces attractive flowers of greenish yellow. The small flowers bloom from June to July.

The fruit of the wild yam is also greenish yellow, and it ripens in September, remaining on the vine for a time in the early the winter months. The wild yam has many other names, such as rheumatism root, Mexican yam, devil’s bones, yuma, and China root.
